Abu Dhabi’s cultural infrastructure is set to be enhanced further following the official launch in late June of the Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi (House of the Arts) development project, a landmark engineering and architectural masterpiece.
Witnessed by HH Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the mega-project is positioned as a strategic expansion of the emirate’s multi-billion-dollar cultural landscape near the Saadiyat Cultural District. Scheduled to open its doors in 2030, the project, which is now under construction, will become one of the region’s largest and most technically advanced performing arts venues designed to support the full ecosystem of performing arts, from creation to performance.
Dar Al Funoon represents a high-value investment in the emirate’s creative and knowledge-based economy, aimed at driving cultural tourism and construction sector growth while cementing the UAE’s presence on the global cultural map.
At the official launch of Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled reviewed the project’s masterplans.
Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the landmark venue was designed by the late, legendary architect Frank Gehry, who also masterminded the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The project’s architectural vision is deeply inspired by the fluid movements of music and the performing arts, featuring a billowing, fabric-like exterior that cascades over the heart of the site. This striking, highly complex transparent façade symbolises Abu Dhabi’s openness to global creativity and cultural exchange.
State-of-the-art facilities
The facility will boast a total capacity exceeding 6,000 spectators across multiple specialised spaces. The structural footprint includes a state-of-the-art, multipurpose indoor performance hall with more than 2,000 seats engineered and adaptable for opera, ballet, theatre, orchestral concerts, musicals, cultural events and awards shows. It is also equipped with world-class acoustics and an orchestra pit for up to 120 musicians.
The multi-purpose hall is complemented by a massive 3,500-seat open-air amphitheatre for large-scale outdoor events, a flexible 400-seat studio theatre for experimental and community performances, and a 250-seat jazz venue dedicated to intimate, genre-focused performances and optimised for acoustic excellence.
Supporting facilities include approximately 5,000 sq m of food and beverage (F&B) and retail spaces, and a rooftop terrace for special events to enhance the visitor experience.

The venue’s advanced infrastructure is purpose-built to support a year-round calendar of elite programming, fostering long-term artistic residencies, international touring partnerships, and co-productions with leading performing arts institutions worldwide.
Beyond hosting global icons, the hub is designed to enrich the local community through integrated workshop spaces, educational interactive programmes, and facilities aimed at nurturing homegrown Emirati talent and anchoring the creative industries within the UAE’s sustainable development roadmap.

The launch of Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi marks the next major phase in the build-out of Saadiyat Island’s integrated cultural ecosystem. The project will join an elite cluster of world-class architectural marvels, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, underscoring the emirate’s commitment to culture as a fundamental pillar of comprehensive development, innovation, and economic diversification.
