In a landmark development for the region’s entertainment and tourism infrastructure, Abu Dhabi has recently given the go-ahead for the construction of the first Sphere venue outside the United States. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in partnership with US-based Sphere Entertainment Co, has confirmed that Yas Island will host the $1.7-billion immersive entertainment landmark.
Scheduled to open in 2029, the destination will combine cutting-edge immersive technologies, advanced engineering, and world-class design at an unprecedented scale.
DCT Abu Dhabi has awarded the main construction contract for Sphere Abu Dhabi to UAE-based ALEC Engineering and Contracting. Under the letter of award, ALEC will be responsible for the full design, procurement and construction of the venue, covering advanced immersive technology systems and complex structural works.
AtkinsRéalis has been appointed lead multidisciplinary design and supervision consultant, responsible for overall design coordination across architecture, structural engineering and specialist immersive technologies.
The project is being delivered under a design and build framework, with both organisations operating in clearly defined and complementary roles.

The category-defining entertainment venue will occupy a strategic plot situated between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, set within master-planned, landscaped grounds close to the island’s existing cluster of world-class theme parks and attractions.
Structural and technical concept
Sphere Abu Dhabi is being developed by the DCT Abu Dhabi as part of the emirate’s broader strategy to further establish Abu Dhabi as a global destination for culture, entertainment, and innovation. The venue will introduce an entirely new dimension of immersive storytelling to the region, redefining how audiences engage with live and digital experiences at scale.
The Abu Dhabi venue is expected to replicate the monumental scale and pioneering engineering of the original Las Vegas prototype, which opened in 2023 as the world’s largest spherical structure.
Like the venue in Las Vegas, Sphere Abu Dhabi will be an experiential medium powered by advanced technologies that will transform the traditional venue model. It will also echo the scale of Sphere in Las Vegas, with a capacity of up to 20,000, depending on the configuration for a given event.

The high-tech will host three main categories of events, all powered by Sphere’s advanced experiential technologies immersive “Sphere Experiences” built on multi-sensory storytelling; concert residencies from regional and international artists, and marquee events spanning combat sports, conferences and product launches.
Cultural crossroads
The entertainment offerings at Sphere Abu Dhabi will reflect Abu Dhabi’s status as a cultural crossroads. While still in development, plans include featuring fully immersive experiences that are the signature of Sphere in Las Vegas, in addition to the creation of Sphere Experiences that convey Emirati culture and heritage, and displaying Emirati artists’ work on the Exosphere. Concerts will feature local and other Arabic artists, as well as global stars.
Sphere Abu Dhabi joins a wider pipeline of cultural and leisure infrastructure at Yas Island, including the planned Disney theme park resort, and in Saadiyat Cultural District, as Abu Dhabi works toward a stated target of doubling international overnight visitors to 7.2 million by 2030 and expanding hotel capacity to 52,000 rooms.
To ensure seamless integration into Yas Island’s existing ecosystem, DCT Abu Dhabi is coordinating the masterplan with key government bodies and utility stakeholders, including the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and its Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), the Department of Energy, utility firm Taqa, Etihad Rail and master developer Aldar
This multi-agency collaboration will align road enhancements, site access, and site-wide utility infrastructure with adjacent assets. Furthermore, the venue’s proximity to Zayed International Airport positions it as a highly visible architectural backdrop for the annual Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, offering sustained global broadcast exposure once operational.
