Spanish engineering company Técnicas Reunidas has announced that it has secured two major contracts from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company for its Upper Zakum megaproject.

Under this, the Spanish company will be providing engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) services for both contract packages worth a total of more than $5.75 billion.

Announcing the big win, Técnicas Reunidas said these were the largest contracts ever awarded to the company as a sole contractor, and form part of the development of the world’s second-largest offshore oil field.

This new phase of development aims to expand Upper Zakum’s production capacity to 1.5 million barrels per day. The planned work includes the installation of new facilities on existing artificial islands and on Zirku Island, including key equipment such as compressors, storage tanks and water treatment units.

Construction activities will also include offshore production facilities, subsea infrastructure, utility systems, export pipelines, and brownfield modifications, it stated.

The two packages are a major addition to Técnicas Reunidas’ backlog, which stood at $16 billion at the end of June. The third remaining package for the project was awarded to the Emirati company NMDC Energy.

Técnicas Reunidas already has experience in Upper Zakum, having been awarded the design engineering works for the same oil field in 2019.
